History of the house
A.T. Gilbert House (1887)
Built in its current location for A.T. Gilbert, noted Salem banker and insurance broker, this Queen Anne style house was the site of many social gatherings. Notable features include the square corner stair tower with bracketed pyramidal roof, veranda with ornate spindle work and porch railings, and double-leaf front door with leaded glass. On the interior, you can still see the oak dog-leg staircase, Louis XVI raised plaster garlands along ceiling on the first floor, and corner blocks with a dogwood design on the door surrounds that lend the building a sense of elegance. The City of Salem purchased the house in 1985 as part of its Riverfront Development Project. Gilbert House Children’s Museum acquired the house through a no-cost lease and restored it with grants from the Meyer Memorial Trust and the community. The A.T. Gilbert House is on the National Register of Historic Places.
