Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to itemize my deductions to claim this credit?

No! You can claim the Oregon Cultural Tax Credit even if you take the standard deduction. This is a state tax credit, not a federal deduction.

What if I donate more than the maximum credit amount?

You can still deduct the amount over the limit on your federal and Oregon tax returns if you itemize. For example, if you donate $1,500 to the Trust but are eligible for only a $1,000 credit, you can claim the $1,000 credit plus deduct the extra $500.

Can I carry the credit forward to next year?

No. The credit cannot be carried forward. It must be used in the same tax year, so use it or lose it!

When is the deadline?

Both donations (to Gilbert House and to the Oregon Cultural Trust) must be made by December 31 of the same calendar year.

How do I claim the credit on my tax return?

Use code 807 on Schedule OR-ASC, Section C (Standard Credits). The amount carries over to Form OR-40, line 25 (or Form OR-40-N, line 50 for non-residents).
