About Us

At Gilbert House Children's Museum, we believe learning should be an adventure. As a nonprofit dedicated to hands-on, play-based exploration, we create immersive experiences that spark curiosity, creativity, and discovery. Located in the heart of Salem's Riverfront Park, our museum has been inspiring young minds since 1989.

Named after A.C. Gilbert — an inventor, Olympic gold medalist, and champion of learning through play — we celebrate his legacy through interactive exhibits and innovative programs. His most famous invention, the Erector Set, serves as the inspiration for our 20,000-square-foot Outdoor Discovery Area, where children can climb, build, and explore year-round.

Our Vision: To ignite enthusiasm for life-long learning in the next generation.

Our Mission: Inspiring Children to Learn Through Creative Play

What We Offer

Housed in five historic buildings, Gilbert House is home to 20+ hands-on exhibits spanning science, art, and the humanities. Beyond our indoor exhibits, our expansive outdoor play space gives children room to move, build, and imagine in every season.

We also offer camps, field trips, and educational programs that extend the learning beyond your visit. Whether it's a school group discovering science through play or a family spending a Saturday afternoon exploring together, there's always something new to discover at Gilbert House.

A Community Where Curiosity Leads the Way

As a nonprofit, we are committed to making high-quality educational experiences accessible to every family in our community. Gilbert House is more than a place to play — it's a gathering place where children are free to imagine, create, and grow.

Come explore, create, and discover with us.
